Topic: Where Insider Risk and Cybersecurity Intersect and Where They Diverge
This session explores the intersection between insider risk and cybersecurity, including the tools, telemetry, and detection practices they share, as well as the areas where insider risk requires a different lens around user behavior, context, intent, and response. We’ll look at how the two disciplines can complement one another, where traditional cybersecurity approaches may fall short when applied to insider risk, and how greater collaboration can help organizations identify and manage risks that might otherwise fall between the gaps.
Speaker: Austin Whisnant, Principle Analyst, DTEX Systems
Austin Whisnant is a Principal Insider Risk Analyst at DTEX, where she works primarily with the U.S. public sector on insider threat analysis, applied research, and training. Previously, she was a Senior Researcher with the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, risk analysis, modeling and simulation, and cybersecurity policy. Her work has spanned large-scale network traffic analysis, cyber workforce training, and statistical approaches to risk assessment.
In addition to her research experience, Austin has served as a lecturer at both the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for Politics and Strategy. She holds a Master of Science in Telecommunications from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics from Furman University.
