SUMMARY:Membership Meeting 10/26/2022
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Business Meeting Slides: October 26\, 2022 ISSA Central MD Membership Meeting \nISSA International Welcome: ISSA Chapter Welcome 2022 Dr. Murray \nSpeaker Slides: S3_GSG_ACTIVE SHOOTER PREPAREDNESS_2022 \nMeeting Recording: October 26\, 2022 Membership Meeting and Speaker Recording \n\nTopic: Active Shooter/Assailant Preparedness for Business and Schools \nThe world seems to have gotten more intense and scarier since the pandemic started in early 2020. Although we have seemed to have come back to some sense of normalcy in 2022\, there is also a cloud of uncertainty and fear that has even the best of us feeling vaguely unsettled. Unfortunately\, this type of social environment can breed the worst type of criminal mind; a psychopathic one\, that has rationalized people unlike them\, or because of “them” have to die. This means that these cowardly and mentally disturbed individuals may attack areas of our society that National Security experts deem as “soft targets”\, that being grocery stores\, malls\, retail businesses\, and community organizations such as schools and parks. What can we do to defend against the unthinkable? What this conversation will propose are well-thought-out tactical and strategic methodologies borne from anti-terrorism\, force protection\, and the intelligence community; to help everyday business people and citizens prepare for an Active Shooter/Assailant when necessary. \nSpeaker: Bobby Sheppard\, S3 Global Security Group LLC  (S3 GSG) \nMr. Bobby L. Sheppard delivers over 26 years of combined experience in law enforcement\, intelligence\, and cybersecurity. For the last 17 years\, Mr. Sheppard has worked within the intelligence community\, serving as a Team Leader\, Senior Intelligence Analyst\, and Program Coordinator\, providing Counterterrorism/Counterintelligence and Cyber Threat Intelligence analysis\, and operations in support of highly classified missions abroad and at home. Prior to Mr. Sheppard’s serving within the Intelligence Community\, he served as a federal law enforcement officer and Executive Protection agent for 9 years with the U.S. CAPITOL POLICE AND CIA respectively. Mr. Sheppard has received extensive training and experience in Anti-terrorism/Force Protection\, surveillance\, counter-surveillance\, surveillance detection\, Incident Management Response; CBRN detection and response; as well as COOP AND COG operations for federal government entities to include the Department of Homeland Security. \n\n

SUMMARY:Securing The IT Supply Chain
DESCRIPTION:A modern IT supply chain\, much like any other\, is only as strong as its weakest link. With increased threats and growing cybersecurity challenges across the board\, identifying these areas for improvement is no longer optional\, but mandatory. Successful IT supply chain management requires equal parts visibility and collaboration with external entities to maximize an organization’s resources and growth\, which means organizations need a streamlined approach to supply chain management to optimize their cybersecurity standards. \nIn this webcast\, join GovExec and Okta as they explore topics in IT supply chain management\, the cybersecurity behind it\, and how new innovations in areas like CMMC\, identity management\, and zero trust architecture can benefit internal and external stakeholders seeking to become partners in the mission to deliver success.

SUMMARY:ISSA DC Hosts: Cloud Security with MITRE ATT&CK
DESCRIPTION:Cloud security is a significant challenge\, and few businesses today are capable of utilizing the native security controls and capabilities provided by cloud platforms. How can you ensure that your cybersecurity capabilities are working to defend your organization’s data as best they can? \nMany security operations centers (SOCs) are typically uniformed in their knowledge of the security solutions available in Microsoft Azure\, Amazon Web Services (AWS)\, or Google Cloud Platform environments. The MITRE Adversarial Tactics\, Techniques\, and Common Knowledge (ATT&CK) framework helps towards this as it is a clear\, standardized method for organizations to address complexity in their cloud environments and increase their cloud cybersecurity efficiency. \nThis session with AttackIQ Academy instructor Jose Barajas will cover practical steps for deploying the ATT&CK framework to maximize your cloud security effectiveness.

NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-53\, Security and Privacy Controls for Information Systems and Organizations\, provides a comprehensive set of countermeasures to protect systems and organizations and manage cybersecurity\, privacy\, and cyber supply chain risk. Each revision of SP 800-53 is the most downloaded publication from the NIST Computer Security Resource Center. SP 800-53 is used by organizations small and large\, public and private\, and across all sectors of the U.S and international economy. As organizations leverage more and more automation to make informed cybersecurity and privacy risk management and operational decisions\, it is imperative that NIST also integrates automation into the development and release of updates to the security and privacy controls. NIST now offers the SP 800-53 controls in multiple formats\, from PDFs /spreadsheets to various machine-readable formats\, and also has a new tool to keep the control up-to-date and allow stakeholders to submit their ideas and feedback any time\, from anywhere. Learn more about NIST’s new resources – the SP 800-53 Controls Release Search and SP 800-53 Public Comment Tool – and what’s in store for future revisions of the security and privacy controls. \nAbout the Speaker: Ms. Victoria Yan Pillitteri is a supervisory computer scientist in the Computer Security Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ms. Pillitteri is the Acting Manager of the Security Engineering and Risk Management Group and leads the Risk Management Framework team/Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) Implementation Project. SUMMARY:SANS Blockchain Security Summit (Virtual + free)
DESCRIPTION:Now is the time to learn about blockchain technology and how to defend it\nLike it or not\, blockchain and smart contract security will be an essential part of cybersecurity programs moving forward. Organizations are starting to understand the benefits of this technology\, and large enterprises\, including Walmart\, IBM\, Microsoft\, and many others are already utilizing blockchain and smart contracts. Financial companies are also adding cryptocurrencies\, and other digital assets to their balance sheets. \nNew technologies often bring new security concerns to the forefront. This is no different with blockchains and smart contracts. Recently\, there have been highly publicized security breaches\, fraud\, and hacks on blockchain platforms\, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. As a community\, we need to understand how to protect and defend against these attacks\, program safe smart contracts\, and custody keys in a secure manner. \nJoin SANS for the first-ever Blockchain Security Summit:\nThe SANS Blockchain Security Summit brings together the industry’s leading experts in blockchain security to share current threats\, mitigations\, and techniques for safeguarding this new technology\, and will teach those who attend how to defend it. This virtual Summit includes: \n\nImmersive workshops – attend half-day sessions taught by the blockchain security experts from SANS and Halborn that cover blockchain security fundamentals\, smart contract hacking\, blockchain defenses\, exploiting NFTs\, and more.\nKeynotes\, panel discussions\, and in-depth Summit presentations – hear from the top security practitioners as they share their latest blockchain security research\, tools\, and case studies.\nZIION – all attendees will receive the blockchain and smart contract testing and development platform.\nOne-of-a-kind virtual networking experience – connect with your fellow summit attendees\, leading experts and analysts\, as well as SANS faculty and resources.\nWorkshops for Spanish speaking attendees – attend the opening keynote and then dive into two workshops presented in Spanish.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting 8/24/2022
DESCRIPTION:The August ISSA membership meeting is sponsored by:\n \nClick Here to register for the August 24\, 2022 ISSA Membership Meeting. \nChapter Business Meeting Slides: 2022-08-24 Membership Meeting Slides \nSpeaker Slides: 2202-08-24 Supply Chain Security \n\nTopic: Supply Chain Security: Preventing Second Hand or Counterfeit Computing Device Components \nIncreasingly\, large enterprise customers are requiring Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and/or Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to show demonstrable proof that they have a secure supply chain. These manufacturers must prove\, through controlled\, documented\, and audited means\, that their supply chain ecosystem is secure throughout the product development lifecycle (pre-manufacturing through product end-of-life.) This legitimate concern is based on the growing threat posed by second hand or counterfeit computing device components. Disruptions in supply chains and the possible introduction of counterfeit components can increase risks to the proper functioning and overall reliability of electronic devices. Even worse\, such contaminated platforms may include malware that could potentially lead to data theft or other types of system compromise. To prevent this\, organizations should only partner with technology vendors that provide verifiable proof that their products are free of second hand or counterfeit components. To do so\, a manufacturer should be able to trace serial numbers or similar identifiers that are stamped or embedded on hardware during downstream manufacturing. For software components\, these manufacturers should work with their software vendors to ensure that only accurate\, non-counterfeit software is ever installed on their products. \nSpeaker: Kevin McPeak\, Deputy Director within the Lenovo Chief Security Office \n\nKevin McPeak\, CISSP\, ITILv3 is a Deputy Director within the Lenovo Chief Security Office. Kevin is a technical SME for endpoint management\, endpoint security\, data loss prevention\, encryption\, mobile device app management\, secure mobile content delivery\, and new defensive technologies. Kevin has two Masters of Science degrees\, with one being earned at Johns Hopkins University and the other being earned at Virginia Tech. He is a part-time PhD candidate at Virginia Tech’s northern Virginia extension campus and is completing his dissertation. Kevin previously worked for Symantec Corporation where he was their Public Sector Principal Cybersecurity Architect. Prior to Symantec\, Kevin worked as an on-site contractor (CACI\, Lockheed Martin\, and AlphaInsight) where he conducted cybersecurity work across numerous Federal Government agencies.
